In Adelaide, a kitchen renovation costs roughly $11,000 to $41,000 for a flat-pack to mid-range job, with premium custom kitchens running to $73,600 and beyond, according to one 2026 Adelaide price guide. The plumbing and gas work is a small part of that total, but it decides whether a new layout is simple or expensive. Moving a sink, dishwasher or gas cooktop means new pipes, a new waste and, for gas, a compliance certificate.
We're licensed plumbers and gas fitters (Licence No. 284188) as well as renovators, so this guide looks at kitchen costs from the services side.

The same guide prices some parts separately: a stone benchtop at $2,300 to $8,300, a plumbing rough-in at $1,375 to $4,600, an electrical rough-in at $1,375 to $3,675 and an appliance package at $2,750 to $9,200.
Where the money goes
- Cabinetry and benchtops are usually the biggest share. We coordinate trusted cabinetmakers and stone suppliers so it's all under one contract.
- Appliances vary enormously, and the choice affects the services behind them.
- Plumbing, gas and electrical, including any moves.
- Splashback, tiling and flooring.
- Demolition, rubbish removal and repairs to walls and floors once the old kitchen is out.
Moving the kitchen sink
A sink needs hot and cold water and a waste that falls to the drain. Moving it a short way along the same wall is usually simple. Moving it to an island is a bigger job: on a concrete slab the waste usually runs in a channel cut into the slab, while a timber floor can often be worked from underneath. The further the sink moves from the existing drain, the more it costs.
If you want a filtered or boiling water tap, plan it at the same time. It needs a water connection and usually a power point in the sink cupboard. Sanitary plumbing and drainage work needs a plumbing compliance certificate (eCoC), due within 7 days of the work (SA.GOV.AU).

Dishwashers and fridges with water
Keep the dishwasher next to the sink if you can. It shares the sink's waste and water, the hoses stay short, and there's less to go wrong. A fridge with a plumbed ice maker or water dispenser needs a cold water line with an isolation valve, so tell us before the cabinetry is drawn.
Gas cooktops: moving, replacing or going electric
All gas work must be done by a licensed gas fitter. In South Australia, installing or replacing a gas appliance such as a cooktop, and any work on gas pipes, requires the gas fitter to give you an electronic certificate of compliance within 30 days (SA.GOV.AU). The cooktop also has to be installed to its manufacturer's instructions, including clearances to the rangehood and nearby walls, so check them before the benchtop is cut. Our own licensed team handles this as part of a kitchen renovation; see gas fitting in Adelaide for cooktops, ovens, heaters and gas hot water.
- Replacing a cooktop in the same spot is usually straightforward, as long as the new one suits the existing gas supply and cut-out.
- Moving it to an island means a new gas line to the island and a rangehood solution that works over an island.
- Switching to induction needs an electrician for the new circuit, and the old gas point disconnected and sealed by a gas fitter. Ask for a certificate for that gas work too.
The Office of the Technical Regulator's advice is simple: don't attempt DIY on gas installations (Department for Energy and Mining). Our guide to gas certificates of compliance explains what you should receive.
Kitchen renovation ideas that save money
- Keep the sink and cooktop roughly where they are and change everything around them.
- Choose appliances before the cabinetry is drawn, so every water, waste, gas and power point is in the right place the first time.
- Spend on the benchtop and drawers you use every day. Save on the cupboard space you rarely open.
- Older homes: SafeWork SA lists the kitchen among the common places for asbestos in homes built or renovated before 1990 (SafeWork SA). Test before you demolish.
- Keep a contingency for what you find behind the old cabinets.
How long does a kitchen renovation take?
Most of our kitchen renovations take around 3 to 5 weeks on site, depending on cabinetry lead times, stone templating and the scope of work. Design and ordering come first, so the timeline starts well before demolition.

Frequently asked questions
Can you move a gas cooktop to an island bench?
Usually, yes. It means running a new gas line to the island, planning the rangehood and ducting, and keeping the clearances in the cooktop's installation instructions. It must be done by a licensed gas fitter, who must give you a gas certificate of compliance within 30 days.
Do I need a plumber to install a dishwasher?
A new dishwasher in the same spot is a straightforward connection to the existing water and waste. Moving the dishwasher, or adding one where there wasn't one before, means new water and waste pipework, which is plumbing work.
How much does it cost to move a kitchen sink?
It depends on how far it moves and what's underneath. A short move along a timber floor is very different to an island sink on a concrete slab. One Adelaide guide lists a whole kitchen plumbing rough-in at $1,375 to $4,600 (What's The Damage?, October 2026). We price it once we've seen the kitchen.
